21 Answers to the Question: Why Aren't You Dating Someone?

Ever get this question? Please tell me I'm not alone. Maybe it's a question more like: "So....are you getting to know someone special?" or "Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend yet?" or "Why aren't you allowed to have a relationship yet? Your parents are so strict." or "YOU'VE NEVER BEEN ON A DATE???!?!!" or other variations of the same basic question: Why aren't you dating someone? Or in other words: WHO ARE YOU FREAK???!?!!!
Well. I got sick and tired of everyone wondering about this. So one night while trying to go to sleep (my other writing friends know how THIS works) I cooked up 21 responses to this FAQ of homeschooled teenagers.

1: Hey, I'm not the one who's supposed to propose. Give me a break!

2: What's dating? And why would I do that to someone?

3: That's between my Dad and God for now.

4: I think my boyfriend is lost. And they probably won't get UNlost for another three years or so.

5: Why do you keep using that word? I don't think it means what you think it means.

6: I actually have no idea. Little help?

7: Oh look! It's sunny outside! Wow!

8: Do you want some of this pizza? It's very good. Homemade. Bring some to your family.

9: *spontaniously break into song and dance off into a handy sunset*

10: Oh...about that...uh, could I get back to you on that one?

11: I have six boyfriends: my dad and my five brothers. I wouldn't recommend messing with me.

12: I'm kind of busy right now, so unless God decides to drop someone in my lap...never mind, that would be awkward.

13: Well, it didn't seem to work out very well for YOU, so...

14: Is it just me, or did you hear a fire alarm go off just now?

15: AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

16: Really? No. Just no. Goodbye. Our friendship is over.

17: Maybe I don't want to date right now? Or ever?

18: This is not the 1800s. Single sixteen-year-olds are no longer considered "old maids".

19: Why do YOU want to know?

20: Do I look like I NEED a relationship?

21: Correction: it's called COURTING.

This is sort of a sequel to my "21 Answers to the Question: Why Aren't You In School?" post I wrote last month. If you guys are interested, I may do one of these every month. *cough* IF I can pull my scatterbrained self together into doing something that scheduled. After all, you've seen how good I've been at this monthly book review I'm supposed to be doing. But ANYWAYS. Let me know if you'd be interested in seeing other posts like this in the future by commenting your opinion below and give me YOUR favorite response to the question "Why aren't you in a relationship?"

  1. Haha! These are great. XD
I guess I'm lucky. I can't remember really ever being asked this question...but now I know some good answers if I do get asked! XD
I really like these posts. Definitely do more! :D

  2. This post is great!
At 15, I have (thankfully) never been asked this question, but I might have had a couple "when are you allowed to date " s. After which I am always thinking,"what, is dating some kind of game?!"
My favorite answer was #18 "this is not the 1800s!".
    Thanks for this, Rebecca! :)

    1. Awesome! I feel you. If one must date, at least do it seriously. Marriage shouldn't be taken lightly.
That's one of my favorites too. ;) You're very welcome! I had fun writing it.

  3. This. Is. Awesome. (By the way, I loved your school one, but I never did comment on it. #oopsies) I have never been asked this question that I can remember...but maybe that's because people assume I'm too cool for dating. (Totally legit.)

However, if someone DOES ask me this question, my foolproof response is, "I'm currently in a love triangle with pizza so dating someone else would be a little awkward, don't you think?" I promise it will work every time. *nods sagely*

Great post, Rebekah! AND YES, TOTALLY MAKE IT A MONTHLY THING. *bangs glittery gavel*

    1. Thank you. ;) Oh, I'm SURE that's why. :P Definitely.

Oh my word... XD *adds answer to list* THAT IS AN AWESOME COMEBACK. I'm going to try that one next time and record their reaction. ;)

So glad you enjoyed!! I'll try doing this once a month...*bites lip* We'll see if I can keep it up. *laughs nervously*

    3. I know, I'm such a genius. ;D I totally want to see their reactions, Rebekah!

(Please do not sue if they stare at you like you have a squirrel on your head, okay? XD)

  4. I love this. So much! I've never been asked this directly, but it's been hinted at in no uncertain terms. Like "So are you going to college, find a guy and get married?" *headesk*
If I go to college, it's not going to be to find a guy! It's going to learn. ;P But yes, I get teased about this a lot. Probably more then normal because I'm either the oldest or 2nd oldest Granddaughter/cousin and oldest daughter.
Funny thing, since I talk about my writing and characters a lot, especially David from AQoH, I've had people who don't know me too well think he was either my husband or boyfriend who is serving overseas. It's the funniest thing to be called "Mrs. Sullivan". xD

    1. YES. The heavy hints are almost MORE annoying than the outright question. >_< I hear you.
Oh, I've had people ask about my characters too because I talk about them so much, to people who don't know me well enough, I might have ten boyfriends for all the different guy characters I go on and on about. XD #writerproblems

    2. *cracks up* to funny Jess! Have not had people think my characters are my husband

  5. *grins* This is great. I haven't really had this problem yet, since the people I tend to hang out with are in the "date the guy you're thinking about marrying crowd", or they're grandparents who don't care. But now I kinda want to (be ask that is). Especially 2. And 9. And 12. And 21.

    1. Same here...but there are a couple people in my life who I see around this time of year who will inevitably ask this question. ;)
Use extreme caution when using my responses though because they tend to be more on the snarky/sarcastic side. Handle them with care. ;P

    2. I have read the horror stories. *nods*
Oh, they're the snark and sarcasm I /dream/ of. :D

  6. I enjoyed reading these, Rebekah! :D
I actually don't get asked this questions, but that's probably because I look young and most people think I'm in the age range of 12-14. ;) ;)

  8. THIS IS AMAZING, REBEKAH!! 4, 12, & 20 — my favs!! Okay, confession here. When I saw the title of the this post, this is what came to my mind... B-) "Why I'm not dating, you ask? Oh, well, no reason. It's just that I don't think my husband would appreciate that..."

  9. In case you are feeling like you're the only one who gets asked this question outright, YOU'RE NOT! I feel like I get this question rather frequently. :)Or worse yet, two combined: "So who are you dating?" Seriously? Does everyone have to be in some sort of relationship??? Here's my response: "See this ring? I've already given my heart to someone." (Neglects to mention that it's my dad. XD)Isn't it hilarious when someone looks pointedly at your purity ring and asks, "You aren't getting married, are you?" LOL.

I loved this post! Yes, make it monthly! (Because I'm finding out so many more ways I can relate to you!)

    1. Oh, it's good to know I'm not alone. ;) I've heard the "horror stories" of other people too, and some of my answers were inspired by friends of mine. :P Nice comeback! I've been wanting to get a purity ring...definitely on my to-do list. :)

Thanks for your vote of confidence! Looks like I'm going to have to do another one! *tries to look sad* *fails*

  11. I love this :P I've been asked that question quite a few times, and I really needed these answers. Number three is perfect!

  12. I get asked this all the time. Trust me, it doesn't go away the older you get. ;) However, it was always the weirdest- and hardest to explain- when guys ask me. Guys my own age. It's only happened a few times, but this was the first year I had to explain to a good guy friend of mine about how I don't date, and it was hard because I felt like I hurt his feelings. However I made a pony picture for him with a "I'm still your friend" caption and he was happy. XD

Enjoyed some of your responses! :D This was funny.

    1. Oh my goodness! I can only imagine how awkward that is. XD I'm glad you were able to sort that out! I'd be afraid of hurting their feelings too. And unfortunately, I'm no good at drawing ponies...so we'll hope that never happens to me. ;)Otherwise I'd be like "here's a really nice stick figure". :P

      So glad you enjoyed!! ^_^
